Each year, the international community in Armenia bestows awards upon individuals who display outstanding courage and professionalism. This year’s “Woman of Courage” award went to Hasmik Khachatryan, who has waged a successful struggle to recover from domestic violence and has since become a leading advocate for women’s rights. In her struggle to regain her self, Hasmik received considerable support from the Women’s Support Center-Yerevan (WSC), which is co-sponsored by the Foundation.
“We are very proud of Hasmik Khachatryan, who has waged a successful struggle to recover and develop a productive, self-sufficient life,” stated Maro Matosian, WSC’s Director. “With WSC’s help, Hasmik not only overcame the devastating effects of 13 years of domestic abuse, but overcame the ordeal of a year-long trial against her batterer.”
At present, Hasmik is an advocate against violence towards women and works at WSC to help other abused women. The award was shared with the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women of which WSC is a founding member. The awards were presented jointly by the US, UK, UN, EU, and OSCE Missions in Armenia.
