Developing the Law on Mine Waste Management

Mining Legislation Reform Initiative (MLRI) recently provided recommendations and legal review to a critically important draft legislation on mine waste management: Draft Law on Amendments to the Mining Code of the Republic of Armenia.

Substantial number of comments related to sustainable environmental management of mine waste, harmonization with EU mine waste directive and global best practices have been accepted by the initiators of the draft law. The Armenian Government has already approved the draft and submitted it to the National Assembly.

MLRI is now organizing public consultations and discussions around the draft law to ensure civil society representatives’ awareness and participation in this process. As a next step of the public discussions, MLRI will communicate civil society’s comments and major concerns to the decision making bodies.
